ファミリークラス・スポンサーシッププログラムから呼び寄せることの出来る、配偶者などいわゆる “Significant other” に当たる家族としては、一般的に配偶者( Spouse)とコモンローパートナー(Common-law partner) が知られており、実際に大多数の申請者はそのどちらかです。
これらと並び、コンジュガル・パートナー(Conjugal Partner)というカテゴリがあるのを見たことはありませんか？
Conjugal Partnerとは
コンジュガルパートナーの意味を調べるにあたって、”conjugal”という語で一般的な辞書を引くとこのような定義が書かれています。
Relating to marriage or the relationship between a married couple.

Conjugalとは、結婚に関することだったり、結婚しているカップルに関係すること、ということが分かりますね。しかしこれだけでは配偶者(Spouse)との違いまでは分かりません。
移民法における定義は…
ここで注意しなくてはいけないのは、カナダの移民法の定義や、カナダ移民局（= IRCC)のガイドラインでは、Conjugal partner というのは非常に限定的な意味合いを持つということです。
conjugal partner means, in relation to a sponsor, a foreign national residing outside Canada who is in a conjugal relationship with the sponsor and has been in that relationship for a period of at least one year. (partenaire conjugal)

移民法ではこのように、「スポンサーと最低1年間 “conjugal”＝婚姻と同等の関係にある、カナダ国外に居住する外国籍者」と定義されており、より具体的な意味が明らかになることが分かります。「1年間の関係」だけ見ると、Common-law partner に通じるところもありますが、「同居」期間については触れられていません。
カナダ移民局のGlossaryにも、大体似たような定義が書かれていますが、異性同士のカップルと同性同士のカップル両方に適用される定義であることが述べられています。
Conjugal partner
A person outside Canada who has had a binding relationship with a sponsor for at least one year but could not live with their partner. The term refers to both opposite-sex and same-sex relationships.
